Reverses

(Lessons by Allan & Claire Whiteford)

When you rebid in a new suit, you are often expecting partner to choose between your 2 suits (obviously sometimes partner may not do this). You need to be aware that sometimes if partner wants to support your first suit, the bidding can be quite high.

Compare these 2 auctions:

2H

In both cases opener has 5C and 4H. However in the 1st auction if partner wants to bid Clubs, they can do so at the 2 level. In the 2nd auction they would be forced to bid them at the 3 level. It makes sense therefore that you need a stronger hand for the 2nd auction. This type of bid which forces the bidding quickly to the 3 level is called a Reverse. A bid is a reverse if:

To make a reverse bid you need 17+ points. If you are not strong enough to make a reverse bid, you will have to rebid your 5 card suit instead of introducing a new suit. A reverse bid is forcing for one round – partner must bid again.
